What's Really Happening

Turnover isn't the problem. It's the response.

Every nonprofit goes through hard seasons. Funding shifts. Leadership changes. Layoffs. New programs that stretch the team further than they can carry.

Your staff keeps showing up for the people you serve, even when it quietly costs them. Over time, this can become unbearable. Trust starts to break down, burnout spreads, and your strongest people start looking elsewhere.

Most organizations respond with a new policy, a wellness day, or another round of hiring. Although those efforts come from a good place, they rarely reach the root.

What looks like a retention problem is often organizational trauma: the lasting impact of stress, loss, and change on how your organization functions.

It's time to look beneath the surface.

Meet Your Consultant

I'm Shawnte' Spriggs, founder of Impel Coaching and Consulting.

I spent more than 20 years in banking, working across risk management, learning and development, and operations. I watched organizations plan carefully for financial, operational, and reputational risk. The one that feeds all the others is their people, and sadly, it's the one most often overlooked.

Since 2018, I've worked alongside nonprofit and community-based organizations as a consultant and trainer. In both nonprofits and corporate America, I've noticed the same trend: committed employees quietly carrying the weight without showing it, and leaders baffled when good people leave.

I'm not alone in seeing it.

95% of nonprofit leaders are concerned about staff burnout.
Center for Effective Philanthropy, State of Nonprofits 2024

Through my continued education in traumatology at Liberty University, including my current doctoral studies, I took a deeper look at how stress, loss, and change shape the way organizations function.

That's why I created The Organizational Health Model™, a six-step, trauma-informed framework that helps nonprofits assess their organization, identify organizational trauma, and build healthier cultures so their best people stay.

Sometimes looking through a different lens is exactly what an organization needs. Someone who can see the patterns that are hard to spot from the inside. Someone who creates a safe space for staff to say what they haven't said. Someone who helps leaders focus on the changes that will make the biggest difference.

That's the role I play.

Not Another Quick Fix

Real change starts at the root.

You care about your people. You've likely tried a few things already. Maybe a staff survey, a new benefit, or a team retreat. Some of it helped for a while.

The real challenge is knowing which changes will make a lasting difference, and where to start when everything feels urgent.

Imagine an organization where:

  • Your systems and communication support the work instead of slowing it down.

  • Your staff becomes your strongest ambassadors in the community.

  • Your leaders lead with intention, even under pressure.

  • People choose to stay instead of quietly quitting.
